Do I Need 2 YubiKeys? Complete Backup and Recovery Guide

You bought your YubiKey and set it up on Gmail, your bank, and GitHub. Everything is perfect. But sooner or later, a question arises: what happens if I lose it?

The short answer: if you don't have a second key registered, you will lose access. Recovering it is a long, inconvenient process, and it isn't even possible on every service.

The long answer is this post.

What exactly happens if you lose your only YubiKey

Every service handles recovery differently. However, in all cases, losing your only security key means one of these three things:

1
Recovery codes

If you saved them when you set up the key, you can use them to log in and register a new one. If you didn't save them — and most people don't — move to point 2.

2
Account recovery process

Identity verification, 3 to 7-day wait times, and technical support that doesn't always respond quickly. For critical services like crypto accounts or password managers, there may be no recovery possible at all.

3
Permanently lost access

In some maximum-security services, without a key and without recovery codes, there is no way back. The account remains inaccessible forever.

The rule security professionals follow

Never just one key. Always two: one for daily use and one backup kept in a safe place. It is the same logic as having a spare house key.

The second YubiKey is not a copy of the first

This is the point that confuses new users the most. YubiKeys cannot be cloned or synced with each other. Each key is independent.

What this means in practice:

The second YubiKey must be registered manually on every service where you have the first one. It is not an automatic process. You have to go into the security settings of each platform and add the second key just like you did with the first one.

It sounds like more work than it actually is. On most services, it takes less than two minutes per platform.

How to register your second YubiKey step-by-step

The process is the same for all services. The menu where the option is located varies, but the logic is always identical:

1
Sign in with your first YubiKey

Access the service normally, using the key you already have registered.

2
Go to security settings

Look for the two-step authentication or security keys section. It is usually under Account → Security → 2-Step Verification.

3
Add a second key

Select the option to add a new security key. The service will ask you to insert and touch the new YubiKey to register it.

4
Repeat for every service

Gmail, bank, GitHub, password manager... each platform separately. Do it all on the same day — once you start, you'll have the complete backup ready in 20 minutes.

Do it before you need it

If you have already lost your first key, you cannot register the second one. The backup only works if you set it up while you still have access. Do it today.

Where to store your second YubiKey

The backup only makes sense if it is in a different place than the primary key. Here are some options:

Daily Use First YubiKey

On your keychain, in your wallet, or in your backpack. Always on you. This is the one you use every day to authenticate.

Backup Second YubiKey

At home, in a secure drawer, in a safe, or in your wallet in card format. Never in the same place as the first one.

If you want to carry the backup in your wallet without taking up space, the Holdtag credit card-format tray is designed exactly for this. Same dimensions as a bank card, it fits in any slot.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use any YubiKey as a backup?

Yes, as long as it is compatible with the services where you are going to register it. The most practical thing is to have two identical models — that way you don't have to think about which one to use where.

How many services can I register on one YubiKey?

It depends on the model, but in practice, you can register it on all the services you use daily without worrying about the limit. Gmail, bank, GitHub, password managers... they all fit.

What happens if I lose both keys?

In that case, you need the recovery codes you generated when setting up each service. That is why it is important to keep them in a safe place — a password manager or printed on paper at home.

Do I have to buy the same YubiKey twice?

It is not mandatory. You can have a YubiKey 5 NFC as your primary and a Security Key NFC as a backup — both work on the same services. Just make sure both models are compatible with what you use before buying.

Verdict

Do you need 2 YubiKeys? Yes.

Not as a luxury — as a basic part of a serious security setup. A single key is a single point of failure. Two well-configured keys give you guaranteed access even if you lose one.

Register them together, store them in different places, and complete the process today — not when it's already too late.
