YubiKey for Banking & Fintech: Revolut, PayPal, Wise and More — What Works in 2026
Your bank protects you against external fraud. But if someone gets into your account using your stolen credentials, the bank does not know it is not you. The SMS you receive as a second factor can be intercepted. A Google Authenticator code can be phished in real time.
A physical security key closes that gap — it verifies the real domain before authenticating. If the website is fake, it generates nothing.
Which banks and fintechs support YubiKey in 2026?
Support varies widely by institution. Here is the current verified status:
| Institution | YubiKey support | Type | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wise | ✅ Yes | Passkey + 2FA | Full support — passwordless login or as a second factor |
| PayPal | ✅ Yes | Passkey | Passwordless login with YubiKey |
| Revolut | ✅ Yes | Passkey | Passkeys compatible with a physical security key |
| ING | ⚠️ Partial | 2FA | Only in some regions — verify availability in ES |
| ABANCA | ⚠️ Rolling out | Passkey | ABANCA Key expanding — YubiKey support expected |
| Boursorama | ✅ Yes | Passkey | Available in France |
| Novum Bank | ✅ Yes | MFA FIDO2 | Full support via FIDO2 |
| PKO Bank Polski | ⚠️ Partial | 2FA | Only in Poland as a second factor |
| N26 | ❌ No | — | Linked app only — no FIDO2/WebAuthn support |
BBVA, Santander, and CaixaBank do not directly support YubiKey. Their strong customer authentication (PSD2) relies on their own app + biometrics. The exception is ABANCA, where support is currently being rolled out.
How to enable it on the main platforms
Settings → Security → Login → Add passkey. Plug in the YubiKey and tap the gold button. You can register it as your primary method or as a second factor.
Settings → Security → Passkeys → Create passkey. Plug in the YubiKey when prompted. This enables passwordless login from that point on.
Profile → Security → Passkey → Add passkey. On iOS or Android, you can register the YubiKey over NFC by holding it near the phone when prompted.
When enabling a YubiKey on any financial service, save the recovery codes on paper or in a password manager. If you lose the key, they are your only way back in.
Which YubiKey do you need for banking?
For Revolut, PayPal, and Wise, the Security Key NFC is enough — it supports FIDO2 and is the most affordable option. If you also want to use it for other advanced services, the YubiKey 5 NFC covers everything.

Frequently asked questions
Does my Spanish bank support YubiKey?
The major Spanish banks (BBVA, Santander, CaixaBank) still do not directly support YubiKey. Their strong authentication system relies on their own app + biometrics. The exception is ABANCA, where support is being rolled out.
Does YubiKey work in the Revolut or PayPal mobile app?
Yes, via NFC. You hold the YubiKey near your phone when the app asks for it. It works on iOS and Android with NFC-enabled models.
What happens if I lose the YubiKey after setting up my bank with it?
You can recover access with the backup codes you saved during setup, or through each institution’s identity verification process. That is why saving the codes when enabling it is critical.
Does YubiKey protect against SIM swapping?
Yes, indirectly. If someone performs a SIM swap and takes over your number, they may try to reset passwords by SMS. But if your email and financial accounts are protected with a YubiKey, they still cannot get in even if they have your number.
