Electric scooter licence plate holder: compatible with the 2026 VMP plate
From 1 January 2026, the VMP licence plate is mandatory for all electric scooters used on public roads in Spain. The plate is an adhesive — without protection, it deteriorates, becomes illegible, and you have to repeat the entire application process. A rigid licence plate holder protects it from bumps, rain, and daily wear and tear.
Why you need a licence plate holder for your scooter
The VMP plate is not a rigid plate — it is a 5.0 × 6.0 cm plastic-coated adhesive. Applied directly to the mudguard, it is exposed to knocks, scratches, rain, and UV rays. If it deteriorates or becomes illegible, DGT regulations require you to apply for a new one — with the associated costs and admin process.
You will have to apply for a new VMP licence plate through the DGT — repeating the entire registration process. A rigid plate holder prevents exactly this.
Where to place the licence plate on the scooter
DGT regulations specify two valid positions for placing the VMP licence plate:
This is the preferred position. The plate holder is fixed with screws and double-sided adhesive onto the flat surface of the rear mudguard. Stable, visible, and protected.
If the scooter has no rear mudguard or insufficient space. The flexible side plate holder adapts to this position without modifying the vehicle.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the holder compatible with the Spanish VMP plate?
Yes. The internal cavity measures 5.2 × 6.7 cm, which is perfectly suited for the Spanish VMP licence plate format (5.0 × 6.0 cm). It fits comfortably and the included transparent protection keeps it visible.
Is it mandatory to use a licence plate holder?
Regulations do not require a rigid holder — the adhesive can be applied directly to the mudguard. However, if it becomes damaged or illegible, you must request a new one. The holder protects your plate and avoids unnecessary paperwork.
Does it also work for the Italian plate and the German sticker?
Yes. The 5.2 × 6.7 cm cavity is compatible with the Italian contrassegno (5.0 × 6.0 cm) and the German insurance sticker. One product for three European markets.
Which model should I choose if my scooter has no mudguard?
The flexible side plate holder mounts on the rear wheel and does not require a mudguard. It is the perfect solution for Xiaomi, Ninebot, and other compact scooters.
Is the transparent protection rainproof?
Yes. It protects the plate from rain, dust, scratches, and UV rays — keeping it legible over time and compliant with the law.
