Where to Place the License Plate on an Electric Scooter According to the DGT

🇬🇧 Information mainly valid for Spain. Regulations are governed by Royal Decree 52/2026 and Law 5/2025.

The identification label on your electric scooter must be placed in a specific location. If it's not properly positioned, the fine can reach €800. This guide explains what the DGT requires and what license plate holder you need depending on your scooter.

What does the DGT say about license plate position?

The Royal Decree 52/2026 establishes three specific requirements for placing the identification label:

1
Rear of the vehicle

The label must be in the rear area of the scooter, visible from behind.

2
Minimum 50 mm from the ground

The bottom edge of the label cannot be less than 5 cm from the ground.

3
Minimum dimensions: 52.8 mm × 65 mm

The support must have enough space for the official label with format M + 4 numbers + 3 letters.

⚠️ Important

Any makeshift sticker or cable tie won't work. The regulations require the label to be fixed, legible, and on the appropriate support. Riding without it or with reduced visibility can result in fines ranging from €202 to €800.

Where can you place it depending on your scooter?

Not all scooters have a rear fender. The valid position depends on your vehicle's design. These are the most common options:

A
Rear fender

The most common position. Many approved scooters include a designed space for the label. Allows fixing with screws, cable ties, or adhesive.

B
Side of rear wheel

For scooters without a fender or with limited rear space. The label is visible from behind and from the side.

C
Rear chassis

On some models the chassis allows fixing the license plate holder directly to the rear frame of the scooter.

D
Rear axle bolt

Option for scooters with accessible axle. The license plate holder is attached to the central bolt of the rear wheel.

What license plate holder do you need?

Holdtag manufactures four models in Spain designed to adapt to different scooter configurations. All include a transparent protector to protect the label from rain and dust.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I place the label with tape, cable tie, or sticker directly on the scooter?

No. Regulations require the label to be on a fixed support and to be legible at all times. A sticker directly on the body or a cable tie without support does not guarantee visibility or stable fixing. You need an approved license plate holder.

Is any position valid as long as it's visible?

Not exactly. Royal Decree 52/2026 specifies that the label must be on the rear of the vehicle. Additionally, the bottom edge must be at least 50 mm from the ground. A side position may be valid if it meets both requirements and the label is legible from behind.

What happens if the license plate is not properly placed or not visible?

The DGT can fine you between €202 and €800 for riding without the visible identification label or without meeting position requirements. In serious cases, they can also immobilize the scooter.
