Does it need a battery or internet connection?
No. It is powered directly from the USB port when connected. It does not need internet or any additional setup to work.
Is it compatible with Gmail, Microsoft, or Apple?
Yes. Compatible with Google, Microsoft, Apple, and more than 1000 services that support FIDO2/WebAuthn or FIDO U2F.
What is the difference compared with the YubiKey 5 Series?
The Security Key NFC covers standard authentication with FIDO2 and U2F. The YubiKey 5 Series adds support for OTP, PIV, OpenPGP, and the Yubico Authenticator app — designed for more advanced use cases or corporate environments.
Do I need to buy two keys?
Yubico recommends always having a backup key. If you lose your main key without having a second one registered, you could lose access to your accounts. The safest approach is to register two keys from the beginning.
