Adhesive or Plate for the Scooter License Plate: The Most Common Confusion of 2026

🇪🇸 Information valid mainly for Spain. Regulations vary in other EU countries.

There is no real choice between adhesive and rigid plate: the VMP license plate only exists in adhesive format. Unlike a car or motorcycle, the DGT does not approve any version of rigid metal plate for electric scooters — every valid identification label is an adhesive vinyl.

What exactly is the VMP license plate?

The VMP license plate is an approved adhesive label measuring 52.8 × 65 mm, with the alphanumeric code M XXXX LLL assigned after registration with the DGT. It is manufactured in weather-resistant vinyl, not metal or rigid plastic.

Why there is no rigid version

Motorcycles and cars use metal plates because their regulations are different and much older. VMPs are regulated under a new regulatory framework (since January 2026), designed specifically for light vehicles — which is why the chosen format is adhesive, more economical and easier to apply to plastic or carbon fiber without needing screws.

What the approved label must meet

Format: 52.8 × 65 mm
Material: vinyl resistant to weather and UV rays
Code: M XXXX LLL, linked to the registration certificate
Anti-tampering system: single use, non-reusable

⚠️ Beware of sellers offering "approved rigid plate"

If someone offers you a rigid alternative as an "approved option", be suspicious — the DGT does not recognize that format for VMP. Driving with an unofficial label can result in fines up to 800€, even if you have the registration done correctly.

VERDICT

There is no choice, there is only one legal option

Adhesive is the only approved form of VMP license plate in Spain. Don't look for a rigid alternative thinking it's more durable or "better" — it's simply not valid to the DGT.

What you can control is that the adhesive stays well secured and protected with an appropriate license plate holder.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a rigid plate instead of the adhesive label?

No. The DGT only approves the adhesive format for VMP license plates. A rigid plate does not meet regulations, even if your registration is done correctly.

Why do motorcycles have metal plates and scooters don't?

Because they are regulated under different regulatory frameworks. The VMP regulation is recent (2026) and was designed specifically for light vehicles, prioritizing a simple adhesive format.

What happens if my label is not the official approved one?

You risk a fine of up to 800€, even if your scooter is correctly registered with the DGT.

Can the adhesive be removed and reused?

No. Approved labels include a single-use anti-tampering system — they are damaged if removal is attempted.
