How to Register Your Electric Scooter with the DGT to Obtain a License Plate

Is it mandatory to register your electric scooter?

Yes. Under the latest regulatory changes, all electric scooters (VMP) used on public roads in Spain must be registered in the DGT National Vehicle Register. Without registration, you cannot obtain the mandatory insurance or ride legally.

⚠️ Important deadline

Scooters without a certificate of circulation will only be allowed to operate until January 22, 2027. After that date they cannot be used on public roads.

Who must complete the registration

The registration must always be completed by the vehicle owner. If the rider is a minor, the legal guardian must complete the process.

What you need before starting

The required documentation depends on whether your scooter has a certificate of circulation or not:

Scooter type Required documents
With certificate (purchased from January 2024) Owner details, certificate number, serial number, technical specification sheet
Without certificate (older model) Owner details, purchase invoice, technical sheet or photograph

Since January 22, 2024, all new scooters sold in Spain must include a certificate of circulation and a manufacturer identification plate.

How to register your scooter step by step

1
Visit the official DGT website

The process is completed entirely online through the DGT portal. You do not need to visit any office.

2
Enter your details as the owner

Name, DNI/NIE and contact information. If the rider is a minor, the legal guardian’s details must be used.

3
Register the vehicle information

Serial number, certificate of circulation (if available), and technical specification sheet.

4
Pay the administrative fee

The cost is approximately €8.67 according to DGT information for 2026.

5
Download your registration certificate

You will receive a unique registration number and the digital certificate. Save it, as you will need it to obtain the identification plate.

If you have questions during the process, you can contact the DGT by calling 060.

The identification plate: where it should be installed

The license plate must be installed in a visible, fixed, and secure location on the scooter. It is usually placed on:

  • The rear section of the fender
  • The rear structural support
  • A clearly visible rear area
⚠️ Important

Incorrect placement may invalidate its identification function. To install it properly, use an adjustable license plate holder.

What you need to ride legally

In addition to registration, you will also need:

  • Mandatory liability insurance
  • The identification plate correctly installed
  • A visible, DGT-approved license plate

Products to comply with the regulations

To install the license plate correctly, you will need a license plate holder. Our recommendation:

If you sell or give away your scooter

You have a maximum of 30 days to notify the DGT of the ownership change. The process is similar to the initial registration (without needing the technical sheet). The DGT will issue a new certificate in the new owner's name.
